Welcome To West Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Barat)


West Nusa Tenggara (known as Nusa Tenggara Barat or NTB) is part of the island chain originally called the Lesser Sunda Island, and refers to the island directly to the east of Bali. Located slightly south of the equator, NTB is comprised of two main island: Lombok and Sumbawa, as wel as hundreds of smaller island and coral atolls in the surrounding waters.

The NTB regions offers a fascinating variety of landscapes, place of interest and various activities for the tourist. Tropical island and coastly lined with pristine beaches, fabulous water for swimming, sunbathing, sailing, surfing, fishing and underwater activities await travellers to the area.

Lombok has a chain of volcanic mountains in the north, providing majestic scenery and lush agricultural lands on its slopes. The higest peak, Mt Rinjani, towers 3726m above the surrounding countryside and is internationally recognised as a world-class destination for trekking and mountain climbing. Around the slopes of Rinjani are forests and agricultural areas, springkled with waterfalls and surrounded by stunning scenery. In other parts of the island, terraced rice paddies, natural jungle and age-old forests thrive in the rich volcanic soil.

Small islands, known locally as “Gili”, surround Lombok and provide endless opportunities for diving, snorkelling, and fishing ind the calm, clear waters. The most famous of these, the “Gili Island” are three small island of the northwest coast, wich attract thousand of tourists annually to their idyllic shores. Equally beautiful island lie of the shouthwest, south and northeast coasts and as yet are undeveloped, but are delightful for day-trips and underwater tours.

To the east of Lombok, Sumbawa is an excciting destinations with mountain ranges, volcanic ridges, inspiring landscapes and acient craters. Mt. Tambora, which dominated the nort of the island, is credited with the most destructive eruption in recorded history and provides an insight into the power of volcanic activity and its own awsome appeal.

Sumbawa’s south coast is lined with extinct volcanic peaks that plunge straight into the Indian Ocean, providing a dramatically stunning coastline. Many beach in the area now attract surfing enthusiasts from around the world to challenge the huge waves along the south coast.

Diving, surfing, snorkelling and deep sea fishing opportunities abound in the waters surrounding this larg island. To the north, Moyo Island, with its pristine environment, waterfalls, native flora and fauna, and amazing underwater world attreacts elite clientele froum around the world. Sumbawa is an island rich in natural resources, many or which have barely been discovered.

Lombok’s accomodation includes fine local hotels and international star-rated resort such as the Seraton, Senggigi Beach Hotel, Holiday Resort, Novotel and Oberoi Resorts. Sumbawa has an Aman Resort on Moyo Island and a moderate range of hotels, particularly at Hu’u (internatiomaly known as Lakey Beach) and Maluk or Sekongkang (in South-West Sumbawa)

The peak tourist season is between mid-June and mid-September and again over the Christmas and New Year season.

Generally, The rainy season is between  October and Marchm and the dry season between April and September, although the weather is pleasant all year round. Avarage temperatures range from 21°C to 33°C.

NTB is not overdeveloped, but has good infrastructure to provide travellers with all the comforts while exploring. Both have unique cultures, with authentic traditions and handicraft to discover. The scenery of both islands varies greatly, from rainforests and jungles, to hillsides terraced with rice fields, to arid savannah plains, to breathtaking coastal scenery.

Lombok and Sumbawa offer somthing to all types of travellers, wether they are looking for peace and relaxation in beautiful surroundings; or excitement and adventure in some of the most dramatic setting in Indonesia.
